Canada has just launched a new temporary residence pathway to welcome those fleeing the war in Ukraine.
Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) is free to apply and allows Ukrainians and their immediate family members to stay in Canada temporarily for up to 3 years. Overseas applicants need to apply online for a visitor visa and provide their biometrics.
Visa applications can be submitted online from anywhere in the world. Biometrics can be given at any visa application centre (VAC) outside of Ukraine. VACs are open in Moldova, Romania, Austria and Poland, and there is an extensive VAC network across Europe.
Applicants are encouraged to apply for an Open Work Permit at the same time they are applying for the authorization to travel. Elementary and high school students can attend high school as soon as they arrive in Canada. Anyone looking to study at the post-secondary level can apply for a study permit once they land in Canada.
Ukrainian workers, students and visitors and their family members who are already in Canada also benefit from these measures. They will be able to extend their permits for up to 3 years at no fee.
Please note, this is a new temporary residence pathway and is not a refugee stream. For those wishing to immigrate to Canada permanently, there are other permanent residence and family reunification streams available.
